Process
I started by reading through The Princess Steel a couple of times to really get to know the content I was working with. I then did some research on W.E.B. DuBois, read about who he was, what his goals were in writing his short stories.
I began thinking of my experience with reading the story and how it could be made better. In its original format, it was very dense and very long, a little difficult to get through with little white space.
I decided to pull some of the vivid imagery out of the story and create those images using the text of the story. The hand pulling the lever, the sword, and the heart help to create some visual interest at regular intervals throughout the story and give the eye some space to rest.
